ORANGE MONUMENT IN ODESSA (2004)

Orange monument Odessa Monument to orange in Odessa

ADDRESS: Langeronovskaya Street.

The Orange Monument was erected in Odessa in 2004.The author of the sculpture is Alexander Tokarev.

According to the legends, oranges saved Odessa. In 1794 Catherine the Second issued an edict on building marine trade port in Odessa which had to be the biggest in the south of Russia. But she died before the construction even began. Paul I who came to power did not want to make the empress’s wishes a reality. When the citizens of Odessa came to know about it, they sent Paul I a few carts with oranges (the emperor loved these fruits). The emperor appreciated efforts of Odessa citizens and allocated funds for the building of Odessa port. Since then the grand construction of the port has begun as well as rapid development of Odessa. People of Odessa often call the Orange Monument “the Bribe Monument”

The bronze monument represents an orange on a pedestal with a segment taken out. Instead of this segment there is a figure of the Russian emperor Paul I. The sculptural composition includes troika and wheels of the cart that symbolize delivery of the gift to the emperor. On top there are the most famous buildings of Odessa – the Opera Theatre and Spaso-Preobrazhenskiy Cathedral.
