Odessa district is situated in the south-west of Ukraine. It borders Nikolaev district in the east, Kirovograd district and Vinnitsa district in the north, Moldova in the west and Romania in the south. It is washed by the Black Sea in the south-west. The territory of the district is 33,3 thousand square meters. The population is 2642000 thousand people. The territory includes 26 smaller districts, 17 cities, 29 towns.
The majority of the population is Ukrainians and Russians. There are also Moldavians, Bulgarians, Hebrews, and Albanians. The climate of Odessa oblast is warm and dry, with warm winters. On the territory of the district there are many big and small rivers (Dniester, Southern Bug and many others), salty and freshwater lakes, as well as Dniester estuary, Hadjibey and Kuyalnik estuaries.
Odessa city (with the population of 1 000 779 people) is the administrative centre of Odessa district and the economic centre of the Northern Black Sea Coast. Odessa was first referred to in 1415 (Tatar settlement Hadjibey), though the official foundation date is 1794.In the second half of the 19th century the city turned into a big center of Russian foreign trade.
Modern Odessa is a big industrial centre of Ukraine with highly developed diversified industries and an important marine port. In the city there are over 170 industrial enterprises. Developed network of roads, advantageous location near the rivers Danube, Dniester, Southern Bug and Dnieper, big sea port Odessa, Illichevsk and Yuzhniy together with Odessa International Airport and Railway make Odessa attractive for international business and tourism. There are about 30 acting commercial banks in Odessa. In the city there are more than 467 joint ventures with foreign capital. Odessa is situated on the Black Sea shore and is a popular Ukrainian resort. In Odessa there are many beaches, parks and health centers.
Taking into account many educational establishments, theatres, museums, libraries, Odessa is known all over the world not only as an economic but also as a cultural centre. In Odessa you can see such amazing architectural monuments as Vorontsov Palace, Old Stock Market, Pototsky Palace, Passage, Potyomkin Stairs and others. Many monuments: to Duke Richelieu, Jose de Ribas, T.G. Shevchenko, N.V. Gogol, A.S. Pushkin, Utesov, Vera Kholodnaya, Adam Mitskevitsh and others. In the city there are many theatres (Odessa Opera Theatre) and philharmonic societies, and the famous Odessa Dovzhenko Film Studio. In Odessa there are many ironic monuments, extravagant shop signboards, street and transport inscriptions because humor is the major myth of Odessa. On the 1st of April each year Humor and Satire Festival is held in Odessa.
