Opera and Ballet Theater - one of the oldest in the city.

In 1804 building of the theater began, and in 1809 it was already built. On February 10, 1810 there already were first performances of Frelih′s opera  "New Family". But unfortunately, in 1873 the old theater burned down. In 11 years, building of the new theater began. The theater was opened on the 1 of October 1887.

The Odessa Theater is built in the Viennese Baroque style.  Above the towering facade there is a sculptural group representing one of the Muses - patroness of art Melpomene. She sits in a chariot, harnessed with four furious panthers. Below there is a sculptural group with scenes from ancient mythology. Downstairs, near the main entrance, on high pedestals, there are two sculptural groups that represent Comedy and Tragedy.  Auditorium is the most beautiful part of the theatre. It′s architecture is performed in French Rococo style. It is sumptuously decorated with various ornaments molded with thin golden leaves. The area of the stage is 500 square meters. Theater of Opera and Ballet has unique acoustics.

The theater is interesting not only for its architecture, but also its rich creative biography. The theater has played a leading role in the development of musical culture in the South of Ukraine. P. Tchaikovsky, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, S.V. Rachmaninov, Eugene Izai, Pablo Sarasate and others performed here. The great Fyodor Chaliapin, Solomiya Krushelnytska, Antonina Nezhdanova, Leonid Sobinov, Titto Ruffo, Mattia Battistini, Eudzhenio Dzhiraldoni sang here, prima ballerina of the world - Anna Pavlova danced here. Ballet Theater troupe consists of 50 people. Among them - Honored Artists of Ukraine Andrei Musorin and Elena Kamenskih. The repertoire:  Giselle, Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Chopiniana, Un ballo in maschera, Carmen Suite... The artists of the Ballet toured in Canada, Japan, Vietnam, Ceylon, China, Hungary, Bulgaria, Finland, South Korea, Italy, Spain and Portugal - with Maya Plisetskaya, Indonesia, Switzerland, Sweden and other countries.
